Session #3, "Group Spiritual Direction" [Reflections on the Dougherty text, posted by Dr. Nissley]
[Please post responses by February 11th to the Session.]
Design & Post Your K-Group Format
The Dougherty text provides insights and some general guidelines and examples of how to develop a spiritual direction group. Remember to contextualize your format for your spiritual direction K-Group to your specific setting. Consult with chapters 4-6 in the Dougherty text. Begin with a baisc format, for example: 60-90 minutes with introductions, devotional vision with group procedures & process, brief sharing by each member followed by silence, closing prayer. Design your K-Group format with your specific goal or focus in mind, and then share it with the class via your post. Allow time to process and critique one another's design.
In order to provide time for the class to respond to one another's blog posts, note the nature of this week's post.
1) Respond to David Watson's statement (p. 11) that the primary task of admonition (spiritual direction) is to help another person live God's truth rather than the details of an order (for example, a monastic rule).
2) How does your faith and receptivity to the Holy Spirit impact your perspective of spiritual direction? (p. 78-80)
3) Respond to each of your class members' posts in Session #3.
Calhoun Text, Part 2, Section: "Practicing the Presence"
Take 5 minutes to practice the presence of God prior to putting on your shoes in the morning, remember like Moses you are on holy ground. Reflect upon the place of God in your life, relax, and center your thoughts on God's presence in your life. Post a reflection on your shoeless devotion.
